How to Apply For or Renew a Medical Cannabis Card

Medical cannabis in the District, legalized by the passage of the Legalization of Marijuana for Medical Treatment Amendment Act of 2010, allows DC residents, including minors, to be prescribed, purchase, possess, and use cannabis to treat a diagnosed qualifying medical condition or related side effect.

Whether you are getting your card for the first time or renewing your existing medical marijuana card, the process is the same. Once you complete all 3 steps below, it usually takes around 1 month to receive your card from the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA).

Step 1

Get a Medical Cannabis Recommendation

You can use your personal physician if they have been approved by the ABRA to recommend medical cannabis (marijuana). If not, you can book an appointment with a trusted doctor below.

Book an appointment today.

Step 2

Submit an Application to the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration

A complete application consists of a patient application, headshot, photo ID, and 2 proofs of DC residency. If you would like the low-income discount, you must also provide proof of your low-income status.

Step 3

Pay the ABRA Application Fee

The application fee is $100 for regular income patients and $25 for qualified low-income patients. The fee must be paid along with a money order, cashier's check, or certified check. ABRA does not accept credit/debit cards, cash, or personal checks.
